The best film I have ever seen – Titanic

As you might know, the 3-hour-14-minute film ‘Titanic’ is not simply a disaster movie about the ill-fated Motorship Titanic during her maiden voyage in 1912. It’s a love story about a 17-year-old American aristocrat girl who is engaged with a rich and hateful guy but falls in love with a young poor artist, who won his third-class ticket in a card game. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack and Kate Winslet as Rose.

This film about love on a sinking ship was (and still is) a great success. It won eleven Oscars, including best picture for 1997. It is considered by the critics to be one of the Greatest Movies of All Time.

My parents say that when the movie was released they went to the cinema to see it on a big screen and many people cried bitterly during the demonstration and after it.

Everybody knows this sad story about the ‘Titanic’ big disaster. James Cameron wasn’t the first film director who told us about the tragedy. But certainly he was the one who spent 200 million dollars on making a film about it. ‘Titanic’ is the most expensive movie to be filmed in the 20th century.

The $8,4 million costume budget alone would finance several independent movies. Production designer Peter Lamont copied the real Titanic down to the small details.

The special effects are in the service of the story. In the 80-minute sinking of the ship, you don’t wonder what’s real and what’s computer-generated. What you feel is the horror of the experience.

Titanic hit the iceberg and sank. Many people died, because there weren’t enough lifeboats to carry all the passengers.

James Cameron was adamant about not including any song in the film, even over the closing credits. Composer James Horner secretly arranged with lyricist Will Jennings and singer Céline Dion to write «My Heart Will Go On» and record a demo tape which he then presented to Cameron, who responded very favorably and included the song over the closing credits. The song went on to win the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

Communication

Communication is the activity of exchanging information between people. We send and receive information, spoken or written, directly, talking to each other face to face, or distantly, when we are at different places.

Communication requires a sender, a message, and a recipient, although the receiver need not be present or aware of the sender’s intention to communicate at the time of communication.

Letters has long been one of the most common means of communication. Letters written on paper are the slowest method of delivering information. In some countries it is even called the snail mail. Other means are telegram, telephone, telex, fax, e-mail, radio, television, newspaper, etc.

Telephone is the fastest means of communication. It lets us talk to people in the same city or in other cities or even in other countries. Mobile phones are being increasingly used.

We can also send and receive messages by e-mail or type messages in a live chat on the internet. It’s not a problem to make a video connection and hold conversation with your faraway friends as if you were sitting in one room. The internet is a worldwide computer network, by which a user can connect his computer to another computer in any part of the world.

The letter, telephone and e-mail are personal means of communication. They are used as means of communication between individuals.

When we have to communicate with a big group of people, or many people at one time, we have to use means of mass communication. Newspaper, radio or television, etc., are means of mass communication, or mass media.

Every means of communication is useful in its own way. Together, they help us keep in touch with our friends, relatives and the world.

The Canterville Ghost

I saw the cartoon film called «The Canterville Ghost» which is quite funny, but I didn’t know that it was based on the Oscar Wilde’s story. So it was interesting for me to read the story which I already knew.

The story is about the ghost of Sir Simon who murdered his wife, Lady Eleanore, 300 years ago and has to haunt the Canterville Chase for the wrongs he committed in life.

Those who live in the house are scared to death by him, he terrifies everyone. But finally the house is sold to an American, Mr. Otis, who is not afraid of the ghosts. His wife and his four children are not afraid, either. They all speak to the ghost as if he was an ordinary man, they give him advice and they worry about his health! The children play jokes on him! Sir Simon feels so depressed that he starts hiding from the family. Mr.Otis’ daughter Virginia feels sorry about the ghost and she helps him find peace.

This is the first story I’ve read by Oscar Wilde, and I must say, I am very impressed with his writing. He makes me think that the ghosts if they exist are not scary and mean. They are just unhappy. I sympathize with the ghosts!

Another thing about the story is that it keeps you wanting to read more and more.

I liked the way Oscar Wild writes. There were phrases which I wanted to memorize.

  • “I’m afraid you are far from well”
  •  “He held a rusty knife and thought of the pleasure of frightening Washington”

I love this story, and one day I’ll read it to my kids.
